Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is the art and science of using medicinal plants to prevent illness and remedy disease and supporting energy, health and longevity

Plant medicine is antediluvian and it is once again rising in popularity to the majority, as a growing number of people take responsibility for their own health. Exploring a more natural sustainable approach, free of adverse side affects that may come with pharmaceuticals. Plant medicines are becoming generally more accepted upon the scientific and medical community as a surplus of re-search and peer-reviewed studies keep emerging demonstrating its efficacy.

The way Plant Medicine works

Plants have a multitude of phytochemical constituents within their pharmacology. Conventional medicine extracts and synthesises one active component of a plant and turns it into a drug. Harnessing a particular constituent of a plants makeup in order to target a specific symptom resulting in a powerful outcome.

A classic example of this, is the invention of aspirin. THE most commonly used drug in the world. Aspirin is prepared by chemical synthesis from salicylic acid, (salicylic acid originates from trees and plants such as meadowsweet). Through acetylation with acetic anhydride, you have the creation of aspirin. A powerful fast acting pain reliever, however, it is not without side affects. Aspirin is known to irritate the stomach lining, triggering gastrointestinal upset, ulcers and bleeding, leading to a host of other problems

The difference between taking aspirin, the synthesised version of Meadowsweet, is that Meadowsweet still containing the full spectrum of plant constituents has multiple action. When taking meadowsweet, it takes longer to take effect for pain relief  although it does have a longer duration. Meadowsweet comparatively actually heals the gut lining, ulcers, regulates gastric acid levels and protects and soothes gastrointestinal tract (GIT) mucous membranes. This is the intelligence of nature at work. And this is how herbal medicine works.

Herbs work in symbiosis with the body on many levels-  The physical, mental, emotional and spiritual plains, allowing the whole body to function optimally as one. Thus creating a domino effect to true health and vitality

We are now bridging the gap between orthodox medicine and the medicine of our ancestors moving into a new paradigm of health

Plants are at the heart of naturopathic medicine; treating the root cause not the symptoms. It is not bandage medicine, it is the original medicine. The phenomena of the healing power of nature, facilitating the bodies natural ability to heal itself- ‘vis medicatrix naturae’
